In 1903, Dr. Nicolae Minovici, one of the most important figures in Romania's medicine, entrusts his friend, young architect Cristofi Cerchez to design his secondary-residence. He commissioned a large enough house to accommodate his vast collection of folk art. Two years later, Dr. Minovici's villa, built on the outskirts of Bucharest, was ready to be occupied by its owner. Less than one year later, in 1906, Dr. Minovici's newly-constructed villa with its generous and lush garden became the first museum dedicated to folk art, in Romania's capital city.
The museum is home to an unique collection of ethnographic art: textiles (shirts, blouses, aprons, towels, rugs, and carpets), ceramics, icons, painted/decorated eggs, rural household objects and, paitings collected by Dr. Minovici over a period of almost five decades.
Vila Minovici is still considered, today, Bucharest's finest example of Neo-Romanian architectural style.
