Strolling through Christmas markets and visiting snow-dusted squares sounds simple enough to plan… Until you look at the itinerary and notice that you’d have to change hotels every few days to get it right.
Still, there is a way to do this. All you have to do is pick cities that connect well and stay in them long enough to actually settle in. For instance, Vienna, Prague, and Budapest work well for this kind of holiday.
Prague to Vienna takes around four hours by train, and it only takes two and a half hours to get to Budapest from Vienna. You could also skip the trains and opt for a river cruise along the Rhine or Danube while still seeing the same festive cities.

Start in Prague for the fairytale setting

Spending three nights here gives you enough time to see more than one market properly instead of rushing between two before the train.
Finish in Budapest for food and relaxation
Besides having the perfect backdrop of a dream vacation, Budapest also has a slower atmosphere than almost anywhere else in Europe (at least during the busy festive season, that is).
The food stalls here are to die for, and will keep you busier than any other market you could visit. And, after two cities of walking around and exploring, the thermal baths are the perfect reset before you head home or decide to continue your trip.
Continue to Romania if time allows
If you want to skip hotels altogether, consider taking an overnight train from Budapest to Romania. Sibiu’s Christmas market is worth the journey with the same small-square, fairytale atmosphere. It’s smaller than markets in Prague or Vienna, but that’s part of its charm.
Fairytale Cruise Routes Across Europe
For a change of pace, booking a stateroom on a European Christmas market river cruise is slower and removes the chore of hotel-hopping completely. Instead, you unpack once and enjoy the ship without having to check in anywhere else throughout the duration of your holiday.
There are several routes that follow the Danube from Hungary through Austria and into Germany, and dock right in the heart of towns you’d otherwise need a train and a taxi to reach.
With markets set up right along the riverbanks in most of these stops, you can step off after breakfast and start browsing through the stalls in no time. This makes a cruise a great choice if you want the same fairytale scenery without having to plan any connections.

A stress-free winter holiday comes down to making the journey as easy as possible. Stay a little longer in each destination, keep check-ins to a minimum and choose simpler transport, whether that’s an overnight train or river cruise. Just remember to book early as the festive season fills up fast.
Packing everything into one manageable suitcase helps too, since cobblestones, station platforms, and gangways can be rougher on bulky luggage than they look.
Most importantly, though, don’t let logistics dampen the magic of Europe at Christmastime. With fewer travel and accommodation hassles, you’ll have more time to enjoy those gorgeous festive squares with a warm drink in hand.
